Hey, Magic Maker!
Welcome to my Substack. It’s where my freebies, blog, and newsletter all live under one roof. Make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss anything!
I’m gonna cut to the chase:
There’s been some controversy on the internet lately about whether using quilt kits and precuts is “cheating.”
I’d like to add my formal two cents:
You can’t cheat at quilting. Period.
It’s not a sport. There’s no winning or losing. It’s literally a hobby. There’s no quilt police coming to arrest you for doing it the “easy” way.
People who accuse others of cheating at a hobby are cranky and have no joy in their lives, so they try to ruin everyone else’s, and I will fight them if they’re mean to you, OK? (not literally, but I will publicly shame them on the internet)

Using precuts isn’t cheating, it’s smart:
You get an entire fabric collection without buying yardage
It’s already cut, so you save your wrists and back (hello!)
There are literally thousands of patterns just for precuts, so you don’t have to wonder what to make
The look so darn cute sitting on your shelf!
I recently did some work for a magazine, and I ordered WAY too many precuts. So obviously I had to turn the extras into something fun:
This pattern is so fun and easy! It just uses one pack of 10” squares or a pack of 2.5” strips, and it comes together in an afternoon!

Hi Amy. Thanks for this pattern! Most of my quilts are for charity and this one will be perfect. (You and I will be a team; your pattern, my quilting, lots of strangers with beaming smiles!)
I love your take on pre-cuts! I don’t often purchase them because I feel like they require more of a plan than purchasing yardage (silly brain). I was gifted a couple of jelly rolls, and now I have an instant plan. Thank you for the pattern!
